Man Dies After Scooter Crash on Mission Beach Boardwalk

San Diego, CA (June 25, 2019) — A man died after colliding with a woman while both were riding electric Lime scooters on the Mission Beach boardwalk, authorities said Monday.
The crash was reported at about 1:35 p.m. Sunday June 23rd in the 3300 block of Ocean Front Walk, said San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims.
The 48-year-old man and 22-year-old woman were “adjacent to each other when for an unknown reason their bodies collided and they both lost control,” Heims said.
Both were ejected from their scooters and landed on the boardwalk, he said.
Neither the man nor the woman were wearing helmets, authorities said.
The woman suffered abrasions to her lower legs. The man had scrapes on his lower legs and also complained of pain in his chest, Heims said.
He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the officer said.
Neither drugs nor alcohol were thought to be involved, and it was unclear Monday if speed played a role in the crash.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause of death and release the man’s name after relatives are notified, Heims said.
A tourist from Georgia crashed into a tree in downtown San Diego while riding a rideshare scooter in March, becoming the first person to die in an accident involving the dockless devices.
The city has taken steps to regulate dockless bikes and scooters in hopes that they would cut down on accidents and nuisances. The regulations include 8 mile-per-hour speed limits in high-pedestrian-traffic areas, including along the Mission Beach Boardwalk.
San Diego City Council has voted to ban dockless scooters for 2020.
